Tips To Help With Fulfilling Your Bucket List

By Helga Stokes

Bucket lists are no longer the preserve of people who are ill. The idea of putting personal dreams down on a list of things you want to achieve before you die was initially designed as a motivational tool for patients. It gave them goals to focus on and strive to reach. Helping them reach their goals was often supported by family and medical personnel. It is a process that allows you to set yourself goals that you can commit to achieving over a period of time by fulfilling your bucket list.

How many items are included, is a personal choice. Keeping the number of tasks on the agenda to ten or twelve, helps to keep you motivated. Giving yourself too many tasks can demotivate you. Try to come up with a mix of tasks ranging from easy to complex. If you start with some of the easiest tasks, such as making that phone call, or tackling that clear-out of a wardrobe which you have been meaning to do for ages, the feel good factor will help motivate you to try another task.

Timescales to complete all the tasks is another personal choice. Too little time may see you not achieving all the goals, while too much time may see you lose interest in completing the list. Be realistic and flexible with timescales. Many individuals setting complex goals give themselves a number of years, or decide that by the time a particular birthday comes around they will have achieved all their goals.

As you achieve goals your self-confidence will improve and you may want to add more challenging tasks to your list. A positive attitude and approach when deciding on what to include as your goals is necessary. Rather than use statements such as I would like to or maybe I should, try using I will which is a much more positive statement.

Some goals may require planning and research before they can be completed. Others involving travel, or purchasing or hiring equipment for an activity will have a financial impact and you might want to set up a savings goal. You need to take into account any external factors or arrangements you will need to make when setting your goals.

Activities, hobbies and travel can be much more fun when shared with someone close to you. Even if friends are family are not going to actively participate, telling them about goals allows them to provide you with support and encouragement. You can mix and match the tasks so that you can do some on yourself and some with other people.

You can be as creative as you like when deciding on what to include as dream goals. There are easy to find sources on the internet where you will have access to a very diverse range of ideas, some fairly simple ones and other more adventurous or complex goals. A broad range of goals helps to keep it an interesting exercise.

Fulfilling your bucket list will challenge physical and emotional strengths. Successfully achieving a goal should leave you feeling good, and help to boost motivation to tackle the next task. The whole experience needs to be a challenge and an opportunity for you to try something new.
