Prison Literature Can Help Some Inmates

By Michael Obrien

There has been much said about prison literature over the years. There are also many people who are both proponents and opponents to it. It can sometimes be surprising to others that no matter what a person has done or who they are that another person would be objected to them reading or trying to better themselves.

So when they are in need of such materials they put out the word that they need help. Sadly however there are not to many public officials that want to help unless it is an election year. So the people who end up donating are usually people who have some sort of history with jail in some way, shape, or form.

There are stories of past inmates who spent multiple years locked up and when they were released ended up having a decent life. So as a way to give back they donated money or supplies to help the place get books or build a library. When this happens it is a great thing, sadly it does not happen everywhere. Magazines are one thing they do have but once they are used up they become old news.

While it is a happy day that they have finally been set free, they have unfortunately already served 17 and 22 years respectively and that is time that they cannot get back.So when you think about these cases you have to wonder if there was anything that could have been done differently for them or to them that might have changed the situation.

While it is too hard to reflect on all that transpired the though of some is that at least the fact that they had access to a prison law library had mad things easier for their defense. It allowed them to help their lawyers and to keep up with what was happening on the outside with their appeal. Things like this are important for inmates, especially these.

Books for jails are not always that easy to come by. Because it is a prison there are rarely ever funds for anyone to just go out and purchase books to supply the library with what they might need. Since this is the case they usually rely on donations from various parties to supply the books they require and most times those do not happen enough.

When murderer on death row is allowed to read legal books that detail court cases, there is a certain feeling amongst some people that they can use that information to delay their punishment. The truth is that nothing can delay such a punishment when they are just waiting to die and no amount of reading can help.

When prison literature is scarce it comes down to the people in the prison and the town surrounding the prison to help out. The inmates can do very little to help their situation because of their situation. But the people who watch them, feed them, and surround them can provide them with the means to better themselves even if just a little bit.
