Manners Training For Children At Home

By Michael Obrien

When a child is at his very young age, it is very important that he already receive some manners training from his parents so that when he grows up, he will get used to that kind of behavior. Of course the ones that must teach the children etiquette is the parents because the parents are the first teachers of the children. So to new parents, here are some ways on how to teach children etiquette.

Now before attempting to teach anything, parents must always remember that children are extremely observant and will notice even the slightest movement of their parents. In other words, if parents would want to teach their children how to be well mannered, then the parents themselves must also be well mannered themselves. If the parents already have some etiquette, then the children will definitely follow in the example.

The first lesson in any etiquette training session would be how to do a simple greeting. Children should always learn how to greet other people who greet them because it is not polite to just ignore other people. The problem is that if they hold on to that habit up until adulthood, no one will want to associate with them in the future.

Another thing that parents should teach their children would be how to act in the public. Rowdy behavior even among children is not tolerated in society as people do not want to be disrupted from their daily routines. So if a child is acting in a very rowdy way in public, then he should be disciplined by the parents so that he does not do it again.

After teaching a child not be wild in a public place, then it is time to get to the specifics. One of the most basic things to teach a child would be to simply ask for permission before he takes something or asks someone for a favor. If a child will have the habit of not asking permission before taking things, then he will be regarded as a thief when he grows up.

Now once the child will return whatever he borrowed, he must also learn how to thank the owner. This not only applies to when he borrows toys but also when he asks favors from other people as well. He should already know how to say thank you when he is in this kind of situation.

Table manners are the next step in etiquette training because it is usually in the dining table where children tend to get restless. Of course when they go out, they must be controlled so that they do not create a scene. Once they have the basics, then it will be quite easy to teach the child to control himself in the dining table.

So basically, those are some of the things to think about when giving children some manners training. Always remember that if a parent does not practice what they preach, then the children will not follow the teachings. Also, if one starts from a young age, then it will be easier to learn when he gets older.
