How To Feel Better In Fifteen Minutes
By Tyrone P. Rollins
Life can sometimes get on top of you and make you feel as if you have no hope and as a result you can start to feel depressed and powerless. But you may be feeling depressed but you are not powerless. If you want to begin to feel better then first you need to just put your worries aside for a second.I know it's easier said than done but just trust me on this one.Get a pen and paper and write down the things that you have in your life to be grateful for. Even if it's as simple as running water, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, eyes to be able to read this etc, etc. Keep writing until you can't think of anything else that you have to be grateful for. Have a think about this and think about how lucky you are to have these things.
Now take a fresh sheet of paper and write down all the things that you appreciate about yourself. What's great about you? Are you a good friend? A great listener? Maybe you're really good at drawing or a great cook? Be honest because if you look hard enough there is something amazing about all of us. Again keep writing until you can't think of anymore or your arm hurts through writing whichever comes first.
Exercise also has physical benefits as well such as a healthy heart, bones, and blood flow. For individuals who don't have the desire to utilize physical activity as a coping mechanism, may find it beneficial to use something such as dance to incorporate this into their treatment. Psychotherapy can be a great help for treating depression, studies show that 50% of people diagnosed with mild to moderate depression achieve symptom relief through psychotherapy. Self-help books on depression are essential to learning how to battle depression effectively. As there are many different diagnoses types for this condition, manic being the most severe form.In my personal experience as a creative writer and someone who uses writing is an emotional outlet, when I don't write for long periods of time my mental health is affected. Exercise has always been a major part of my life, and when I veered away from it I could feel the effect it had on my stress level and mood. Exercise has been proven to be one of the most fast acting anti-depressant treatments because of the immediate response our bodies has to it. There is no one size fits all treatment for this condition, everyone has different needs and their own unique response to treatments. However patients suffering with this mental health disorder have to all start with one thing, and that is acknowledging that you have a problem and you need help.
How are you feeling today? Would you like to feel better tomorrow? If so, here's some good news: You can feel great in just 24 hours by making small changes in your diet and lifestyle. These changes don't require you to do anything extraordinary. In fact, these are the little rules that we know we need to live by for optimal health and happiness, but which get shoved aside by our daily routines.Try them out for a day, and feel the difference,Start Your Day Off Right.Look at your usual breakfast choices. Could they be healthier? Do you skip breakfast in an effort to save calories, or because you don't like to eat first thing in the morning? Your breakfast kicks off your metabolism for the day. If you run on empty all morning, your metabolism will slow to a crawl. You'll also find yourself starving by lunchtime, making it more likely that you'll overeat.Give your morning a healthy start by preparing a nutritious breakfast of turkey bacon, eggs, and fresh strawberries.
If you'd prefer something more portable, mix up a smoothie using silken tofu and various fruits. If you're a light eater in the morning, at least have some peanut butter on whole grain toast. The important thing is to get a dose of nutrition to get your metabolism in gear and make you feel better all day long.Stretch and Relax.Mornings are a great time to stretch your muscles and prepare yourself to deal with the stress you will encounter during the day.You can do stretching and relaxation exercises before you get out of bed, or after you eat breakfast.Sit down in lotus position and gently stretch your arms, hips, and back. Do head and shoulder rolls to relieve any tension that built up overnight. Then straighten your legs and stretch them one at a time.Return to lotus position and close your eyes. Feel your stress draining away along with the muscle tension. Breathe deeply, and hold each breath for a count of five.Do this for five minutes while you visualize the tasks you would like to achieve that day.Get Hydrated.Once you're ready to head out the door, grab some drinking water to take with you. Most of us go through our days in a state of mild dehydration. Medications and health conditions can make dehydration even worse.
Be sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water. It's best to drink throughout the day, perhaps sipping on a 32 ounce cup of water all morning, then refilling it at lunch and drinking the rest over the course of your afternoon. You might find that you need to make more trips to the bathroom, but that's a sign of proper hydration. It means your body is letting go of retained fluid and flushing itself clean.Get Energized.Snacking is an important way to keep your energy level high. Look for snacks that pack a lot of nutrition into a handful of calories.Almonds are an excellent choice because they contain protein, healthy fat, and healthy carbs. Low-fat cheese or yogurt is another good choice. Raw fruits and vegetables give you plenty of vitamins and minerals for a low calorie cost.
Be thankful for everything that you take for granted. Caught in drizzle? Be thankful that you have an umbrella. No umbrella? Be thankful that you can run and take cover. Nowhere to take cover? Be thankful that you can run! Remember, there are many who cannot.Always compare yourself with people who are less fortunate than yourself. I don't mean just moneywise or healthwise. Whatever your situation be, there will be others who are in a worse place. Appreciate the merits of your situation.
Help a stranger. Random acts of kindness can do wonders to make you feel good. Helping someone to cross the road, buying coffee or tea for someone who looks like he/she needs it, giving way to someone in a hurry, offering to carry the grocery bags for someone who looks more tired than you are...these may sound like mundane, everyday incidents, but do not underestimate their effect.
Give yourself to others. Volunteer for social work. Feed an orphan, clean up your neighborhood, and help the environment. Nothing fattens the heart than being able to do well to your fellowmen. Volunteerism enables you to exercise your body and mind, as well as allow you to practice generosity and love for mankind. Loving others make you love your self more, as you acquire self confidence and enhances your self-esteem and self-worth. As an added bonus, volunteerism will give you the chance to meet like-minded individuals who can increase your network of friends. They can be your support group, and if they are as good friends are they are, can be pillars of support when the going gets rough for you.Treat yourself to a makeover once in a while. You deserve it. Not that you need to look better, but it is always advantageous to pamper yourself. Go to the spa. Have a facial. Indulge in a Thai massage. Going out of the spa, you can really feel yourself spic and span, smart-looking and confident. The way you look contributes to how you feel about yourself, therefore, look your best.Make time for yourself. Meditate. Open your thoughts in an environment of calm and serenity. Go climb a mountain. Pray. However you do it, talking to yourself allows you to keep in touch with your inner thoughts. You will discover a lot about yourself that way, and that is always a good thing.Introspection also allows you to plan ahead in your life. So, free from distractions and the chaos of the everyday world, you can chart your destiny in life. And having a plan, having a course to set would enable you to be more successful in your life. And success, my friend, makes you feel better about your self, because it is an affirmation of what you are and what you are capable of doing.Above all, love yourself. There is no greater love than loving yourself, because you cannot give what you do not have. So, if one is filled with love, you can be generous in giving out love. That is the best way to feel good about yourself.
